To make a living and support their family, many traditional writers have to take a second job. Advances and royalties from books are not enough.

How Much Do Writers Make – Traditional vs. Blogger
Writers earnings depend on many factors, from the condition of the market to where and what platform the writers decide to publish their works.
How Much Do Traditional Writers Make?
Traditional writers make money by selling the right to their works to a publisher in return for advances against royalties.
If a novel writer receives a $5,000 advanced payment from a publisher with 10% royalties on the profit of each book. Let say the book is retail for $25 each, then 4,000 copies must be sold for the writer to break even. If this takes three years to complete, the writer makes less than $2,000 per year.
It is possible to make millions of dollars as a traditional writer, but you have to be in the top 1% which few writers can achieve this status.
Furthermore, the book industry is dying as more and more readers are going online. Many traditional writers start publishing their own e-book to supplement their writing income.
eBooks cost less to publish than traditional printing. With e-books, the writers’ margin of profit is higher. However, writers must work to market their own book. Marketing is the biggest challenge that writers face when selling their e-books.
Self-published Writers spend about 20 percent of the time writing and 80 percent promoting their e-book.
eBook writers only make money when books are sold. Therefore, their earnings fluctuate between zero to hundreds, even thousands, of dollars depending on how good they market the eBooks.
Many eBook writers never make a penny from their book.
